Pizza Bake

Monday 2 May 2011, 12-6pm

Hackney’s Off Centre will be hosting a day of celebration at the Garden on the May Day Bank holiday to launch a summer of pizza baking, bread making and cooking in our new clay oven. Visitors, Hackney Hosts and other Garden volunteers, young people from the Off Centre’s Right Track programme and local children all joined in every day over two weeks before Easter, laying bricks, treading clay and building the oven. You can see pictures of the build and read more about the process, and listen to interviews by Clair Urbahn from NTS Radio.

We sneaked in a few ‘test’ pizzas on the final build day and now the clay oven is ready for the official ‘first bake’!

Ben MacKinnon from E5 Bakehouse will be helping us cook the pizzas for the afternoon, there will be music from local musician Robin Grey and you can join in sowing tomato and basil seeds for the new ‘pizza bed’ at the Eastern Curve.

The clay oven project was created by Thomas Lindner from TheKindest and developed by the Garden in partnership with the Off Centre, in collaboration with SasaWorks. It has been funded by NHS-Primary Care Trust City Hackney.
