Sunday 28 September 2014, 2-10pm

The Dalston Eastern Curve Garden is throwing a party this Sunday 28 September,  2-10pm to celebrate the restoration of the Hackney Peace Carnival Mural which is right outside the Garden’s front door. Hackney Council have paid for its restoration this summer.

Paul Butler and Linda James who worked on the mural this summer with Hirst Conservation will be giving talks about their work, and about other London murals they have painted. There will be live music from Hackney musicians and Newton Ace (Dunbar) of Dalston’s Four Aces Club will be playing Soul and Reggae.  ‘The People’s Kitchen’ will be cooking a feast all afternoon for all to share and children will be able to join Hackney artist Laura Halliwell in art sessions inspired by the mural.

As Darkness Falls…

We are delighted that The Turbans will be joining us and Andy Diagram, local trumpet player will also be joining the Party, its a rare solo gig incorporating his trademark electronics as he improvises, creating live brass loops, generating evolving soundscapes – atmospheric, melodic and rhythmic. All controlled via a mobile phone attached to the top of his trumpet with a fish slice! He will be responding to and improvising with (Jaime Rory Lucy’s) Rucksack Cinema.  Jaime transforms local clubs and spaces with his mix of live video imagery that is projected onto whatever is around. Expect the walls and trees throughout the Garden to be lit with flickering magic and enchanting sounds.

Memories

Sunday’s event is an opportunity for Hackney residents to get together to celebrate the restoration of this iconic public artwork. We are asking visitors to share their memories of the Mural – the original Peace Carnival event over 30 years ago, the people the painting depicts and what it means to today’s Hackney residents. Sunday is the start of our ongoing project to collect memories and stories about this much loved Dalston landmark.

Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September 2014, 2pm & 4pm

If you want to hear more about how Dalston’s disused Eastern Curve Railway Line was transformed into the Curve Garden in 2010, we will be giving free talks at 2pm and 4pm on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 September 2014, as part of the architecture and design treat that is Open House London. There’s so much to see, and too much to recommend, but if you enjoy fresh vegetables from our friends at ‘Growing Communities’ you can go along on Sunday 10- 5pm to see their ‘Eco Classroom’ in Allen’s Garden’s, N16 5BD or around the corner to Oto Projects rehearsal space on Ashwin Street, where there will be musical performances throughout the weekend.
